Improvements to repeat

Using this as a holding space for repeat improvements - Repeat should work for events. Notes too, I can't see an obvious use case for repeating notes but it adds no overhead. - Should be able to end a repeat after x number of repeats, or on a particular date. - Choose to update a repeat on current, future or all entries - More flexibility with repeat options - Choose wether tasks should repeat when complete, or when created - If choosing repeat when complete, repeating weekly/monthly/yearly events should repeat according to their original repetition period i.e. weekly task should repeat as a weekly task even if it gets moved to a daily task - Ensure that repetitions (especially events which have utc dates) work with DST - When repeating when complete -> choose wether data carries forward

In the new system, repeating tasks cannot be shown into the future, because of the way the overdue tasks can be re-scheduled. In some scenarios, it's possible to show tasks into the future, so I made a ticket here for it. Please vote on it if it's something you feel is missing. https://bullet.canny.io/feedback/p/allow-showing-repeating-t…

I love the new repeat options! It feels much more customizable, however, some tasks that I choose to repeat on the same date/month/week don’t really show up on the calendar view for the selected dates in the future. I would love not only to be reminded of or save the repeater but to actually have it “duplicated” and show on set future dates so I can mark completed or simply view it in yearly view to better organize myself. I’m thinking something like on the google calendar thats shows future instances repeated and when you edit one on a specific date asks you if you want to edit only that one or all future events. Would be awesome to have this feature! I’m really looking forward to using this app for many years to come, thank you.

Hi everyone, the repeater update is now live on all platforms with support for entries/notes, more flexible repeat options, proper support for all week/month/year entries, and tasks now have the option to repeat x days after completion if the item is overdue (a popup will appear, thanks for the idea @Desperate Millisent) The new system uses repeater templates, rather than taking the state of the previous entry - so sub-entries stay as you define them and can be updated. Old repeated tasks must be manually updated, they'll stop working eventually. Tasks work fully offline now also, whereas event/note repeaters have partial offline support. Repeated entry instances are automatically created when online, and can be manually generated when offline. This was a technical limitation to make sync work properly across multiple devices without surprises. Adding a repeater has the same flow as before, but if you want to edit a repeater, go to an entry detail page and tap on the repeat icon on the right in the new date picker box. Thanks all for your input! If you have any bug reports, feedback etc on this new update, please share it here: https://bullet.canny.io/feedback/p/new-repeater-feedback

I would prefer both, but if it can only be one, then I would go with Option B

Nov 12, 2025

Thanks so much for your votes and inputs everyone (and patience) :) I'm planning now 💪 Quick question about repeating tasks: Let's say you have a task "Check equipment" that repeats every 10 days. Which behavior would you prefer? Option A: The task always appears 10 days after you complete it - If you complete it 3 days late, the next one appears 10 days from when you actually did it - Maintains the 10-day gap between completions Option B: The task appears on a fixed 10-day schedule from the original date - If you set it up on Jan 1st, it appears Jan 1, 11, 21, 31, etc. - always - Even if you complete it late, the next occurrence stays on the original schedule - (Similar to how "every Monday" always falls on Monday) Most people want Option A for maintenance tasks. But I want to check: does anyone need Option B for interval-based tasks. For notes and events, this won't be applicable, they'll always follow the original schedule. And for tasks with a set day (i.e. every 1st of month or every Tuesday)

Nov 12, 2025

Hamish, is it possible to make is similar to overdue tasks when you complete some of them, ex. from a week view, app is asking when you would like to complete it: today (when you are clicking complete) or on the original date? When you click on today, the repeat period will move, when original date - it will stay like it was. What you think?

Nov 12, 2025

Hi Hamish ! I know this is not the desired answer but I want the option for either. It was one of my main requirements for an app (but bullet won out on everything else) I have some tasks that are relative to last completion, like "replace vacuum bag" that shouldn't be done again too quickly if it was late. But others like "log monthly budget" that should be on the 1st week of the month even if I was a bit late last month. These are usually not every X days repeats for me (like the "every Monday" example), but allowing an option would be the most flexible to handle odd schedules

Nov 12, 2025

Hamish I personally prefer to have an option to choose with each task. I've been using Todoist for ages just because it has that feature, some tasks need option A, some - option B. I'll be grateful to have any option you choose, but it would be a great improvement among many apps, of you manage to add both scenarios <3

Nov 12, 2025

Hamish option A!! Thank you Hamish!

Nov 12, 2025

Hamish Well if tasks with a set day will be supported like every monday or every last Sunday in the month I think one would mostly need interval based tasks that repeat after completion (A). With a fixed interval schedule (B) you often end up with a old non completed item and a new available instance together if you are late. I do likely see a need to have this option even it wouldn’t be used as often. Regarding the new interface when you complete tasks scheduled on a past date. The best solution would be to prompt the user if the task should be done on the past date or today like it was previously. I don’t like the new interface where the task gets completed on the past date if you check the checkbox and today if you press on the done icon. It’s to much friction for me. I also will forget what each option will do. However I like the quick solution to migrate the task to today. Maybe how the app behave could be a setting.

Nov 13, 2025

Desperate Millisent I came here to say exactly this Hamish. I think that I would mostly use option A but there a few things where option B would be better. Would be nice to have the option of either.

Nov 8, 2025

Any updates when improvements to repeating options are coming? Bullet have the best planning system and with better repeat support would take the app to the stars.

Nov 9, 2025

Western Cilka: I'm just updating how notifications work, and then I think I'll work on this next, it's quite a big update so I'm not sure how long it will take, but my best estimate is sometime in December

Oct 12, 2025

Okay so the new addition of migrate\complete buttons on overdue tasks is a kind of solution to this. If you migrate your overdue task to today using the new (left ⬇️ button), then complete the task, it no longer re-adds the task as still late from the last time you didn't do it. Lol So. The reason this works for me but maybe not others: It sets the new repeat date to the day you migrate to. (Makes sense) Why it doesn't work for certain situations: I'll use the air filter example again. I want to change my air filter on the first of every month. I forget to for a couple months. I finally migrate and check it off. But today is the 12th! Now it'll remind on the 12th. Not a huge deal, and I am happy with the addition.

Oct 17, 2025

Gothic Augusta Ah thank you for pointing this out, it does solve this quite well! * if you want the task to repeat from original schedule, then mark it off from the overdue section. Cancelling it from here also works to "postpone" to the next scheduled repetition * if you want the task to repeat from completion, migrate and then mark it off from "today" it means I need to consider the type of repetition when I do morning migration but this WORKS.

Sep 26, 2025

i agree, i've "school" that i have to create manually for all non-weekend days

Sep 10, 2025

Yess

Aug 12, 2025

Agreed!

Jul 30, 2025

Yespls! I have one task I need to do every 8 days and another that's every 10 days, and it is just not easy to set that up.

Jul 29, 2025

This is such a useful feature for some tasks that has to be done frequently but sometimes vary in frequency. To have the reminder still in sync over time. Like changing the filter in a air heat pump: You need to check it every x days, sometimes it needs changing right away, sometimes you pospone two weeks and check again. If I pospone it twice, I dont want another reminder too soon. I want it in the original x days after completion.

Aug 10, 2025

Awful Amy That is literally the entry that made me think of it when I was setting up the app. Lol

Oct 12, 2025

Awful Amy The new addition of Migrate to today or check off buttons on overdue tasks sorta fixes this problem for us.

Jul 22, 2025

You can currently do this by connecting a Google calendar and making your events there.

Please!!

Use case for features I'm sorely missing (updating single occurrence): - Every week, I create content. So this is a weekly recurring task. (Which I want to see in the calendar for all future weeks so I don't overbook for those weeks) - On Sundays, I plan the week ahead. I decide to plan content creation for Tuesday (while the recurring thing remains week-based, not every week on Tuesdays). - Then, I suddenly have an idea: this week, my topic of content creation will be XYZ - I want to edit the description (but again, only for this particular instance, not for all content creation instances) - I also decide that I want to add an extra subtask (for whatever) to this particular instance of content creation (for instance, this week I'd like to send out a newsletter) - again, this subtask should only apply to *this* instance. Same in my personal life: - Every week, I do groceries for the entire week. Weekly recurring task I need to see to not overbook myself. - When I plan my week on Sundays, I'd like to schedule groceries on Monday (for this particular week, not for all weeks) - I want to remind myself to bring a coupon I have (description changed for this particular week) - I decide that I need to stop by an Asian supermarket for the recipes I have for this week, which becomes a separate subtask for - again - only this week.

May 15, 2025

I'm here to second that being able to repeat an event would be awesome. I would like to start using bullet to add my events to and I have a few events that occur weekly. Or, the ability to edit my Google calendar events would be great. (Or is that already a possibility?)

Apr 1, 2025

Hi Hamish, any updates at all on improved repeats coming? I'm having an issue with using tasks to keep track of anything that repeats, even if it's just an event or a note. Alternatively, it would be helpful to have completed tasks stay visible within the weekly view, as I like to see those repeating things even after they've been completed. Thank you!

Apr 1, 2025

Tragic Anne-corinne: Definitely coming, but no timeframe yet and I haven't started work on it. Currently I'm working on a big infrastructure overhaul under the hood, and then I can start working on features again more quickfire. I'd like to work on repeat improvements *hopefully* this coming quarter, but no promises.

Apr 1, 2025

Hamish no worries! Thank you for the update. :) In the interim, I have just been using tasks for things that aren't really tasks and then turning them into notes when they're in the past. Not ideal but it works for my uses for now. :) I appreciate your hard work!

Repeating task lists; I’m new to the app so maybe I need to play around and watch more tutorials, but I’m struggling to fill a specific need. There are task lists that I have which I want to repeat/check off daily, weekly, monthly etc. These are tasks that simply have to be completed at some point in that time frame but not a specified date. Some of the daily lists are just my routines, which may seem redundant but a checklist reminder to “feed the cats” (which would be done regardless) helps with my motivation/executive functioning. I would want a list such as “AM tasks” “PM tasks” which are just my routines, but it ensures I don’t miss any part of the routine, and others like “Weekly tasks”. I would want the tasks to repeat whether marked done or not, and the tasks to repopulate as per the repeat (daily/weekly/etc). If I were to add all these repeating tasks individually, it would look so overwhelming despite a lot of the tasks being minor/insignificant in the grand scheme of a day. I like that repeating notes is also being looked into. I am curious about adding prompts to notes. I would want a repeating note such as “Sleep Journal” with repeating prompts ex: “Do you recall any dreams? / How much REM sleep was achieved?” Looking forward to seeing any updates or any advice I can receive!

Feb 17, 2025

Is this also the placeholder for repeated items being in the list by default instead of only after completion? This is starting to mess with my planning as I'll look at a day and think I have heaps of spare time because it doesn't take into account repeated tasks that aren't completed yet. Example: I have a task that repeats on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Sunday, I create my week schedule. My Friday looks empty - great! Oh no, after completing the task on Wednesday I suddenly realize I have it on Friday, too.

Dec 9, 2024

Also voting in favor of repeat events, it would be a good way to mark stuff like birthdays and etc.

Nov 6, 2024

Bumping in favor of having repeating events

Oct 29, 2024

I would like to add a request for complex repeat options—I think this falls under “more flexibility with repeat options”. I have some tasks and events that repeat on, for example, the first Tuesday of the month. Bullet currently can’t handle these cases.

Sep 19, 2024

Right now thats its behavior, but I also think that putting all the repeating tasks would be better, so you can view your future task when planning in advance

Sep 15, 2024

Re: Repeating Notes, I actually do have a use case for it and came here to make the feature request. Glad to see it’s already being thought about :-) Use case: I live in a country where I am not part of the majority ethnic group, therefore my ethnic holidays are not official holidays. It would be great if I could mark these holidays in my planner as notes—they typically aren’t events, since I don’t have anywhere to be for them, nor are they tasks, since I have nothing to do for them. Notes are the perfect “dumping spot” to put these sorts of reminders.

Jun 11, 2025

Eldest Charmine +1 to Repeating notes. Those could be great to setup templates / prompts for thoughts, preset with a particular structure. Some examples: Mood note, Health state tracker, Weight tracker, Day/Week/Month focus, Learning tracker, etc. Note that in such cases it might be good to remove or discard the note when it’s empty (no additional input provided). Given that a note can have subtasks, it could play a role of grouping regular tasks/items, e.g. morning routine.

Nov 5, 2023

Hi - actually, this is already possible but not well documented. You can 'cancel' a task from the task detail screen. Cancelling a repeating task will cancel an individual task but allow the repeats to continue. So I must make this more obvious!

Jul 25, 2023

This would be great. I bought premium just for this feature, but it really doesn’t do any good for me if I’m looking at a date two months in the future and can’t see tasks. The whole reason I have a task app is because I can’t keep it all in my head.

May 12, 2023

And for notes, as I like to remind myself on certain days of things, but they are not tasks or events.

Mar 6, 2023

Was so confused as to why i couldn't see them! I actually kept deleting and adding the recurring tasks thinking I was doing something wrong because they did not appear in the future. Can someone explain how this is works currently? A more intuitive implementation of this would certainly be appreciated.

Apr 4, 2024

Frightened Alica - I also am thoroughly confused by repeating tasks because I set them and then I don't see them show up at all

Apr 6, 2024

Frightened Alica: Thanks for your feedback. I do plan to change this. For now tasks are repeated when you complete them

Apr 13, 2024

Hamish- that is a bit illogical and non-intuitive. I have tested repeating events for future tasks and can never find them (likt Alicia and Alice). Please fix :-)

Sep 9, 2024

Hamish I think one issue with this is that you don't have an overview of the future. Like, if I need to complete a task on Monday before it appears on Wednesday, I might mistakingly assume my Wednesday is free while it's not, making me overcommit....

Feb 24, 2023

I think if implemented this should be something you can switch on or off, perhaps for some items it would be useful whilst for others it would clutter up one's timelines. I don't want to see eg. daily and weekly household chores on the year/month view.

Jan 9, 2023

Hi there, yes this is not currently possible. There is a workaround which is to add a recurring event on your device calendar and then link the two together - however I realize this is not ideal.

Jan 9, 2023

My use case: I have a weekly family dinner on Thursdays. I want to make sure I remember it when planning things.

Nov 14, 2022

Oh, and you also ask for a note on the last time it was completed, can you give me some background on what you want that information for? Helps me to understand the problem you're trying to fix :)

Nov 15, 2022

Hamish: for instance...cleaning the fridge once a month..the note would show when you actually did it last

Nov 14, 2022

Would a 'cancelled' status work for you? I'm running into this problem myself, and I'm thinking of a feature where cancelling the task would cause the repeat to happen - whereas archiving would not.

Nov 14, 2022

Hamish: maybe a "skip" option? Im not sure...I guess im thinking more like a habit tracker sort of

Nov 14, 2022

Wasteful Bert: Effectively it would do the same thing - the reason I suggest 'cancel' is because other feedback has asked for a task cancelling feature.

Sep 16, 2022

I've thought about this one before. It might be something I update at a later date, but it makes recurring tasks more complicated.
